Meet the Mayor

Alan Anthony “Tony” Grider was born in Clarkston, Washington, raised on the Palouse and graduated from Asotin High school. He earned an Associates in Arts degree at Walla Walla Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science with a pre-law focus from Washington State University.

He worked for Northwest Children's Home for troubled youth in a residential treatment facility and education center in Lewiston, Idaho. Here he was motivated to change his career field from law to education after recognizing that children were routinely being denied a quality education which is needed to break free from institutionalization and to become productive members of society.

Furthering his education, he attended the University of Idaho and earned a Masters of Education with certifications to teach social sciences and arts.  He taught for three years at Ashton High School in Southern Idaho and earned Washington Teaching Certification in Washington before moving to Skykomish during the first phase of the cleanup.

Tony and Crystal were married and now have seven beautiful children and all but the youngest attend the Skykomish School District.

At Skykomish High School, Tony teaches Civics, U.S. History, Current World Issues, World History, Art (multi-level), and Publications/Yearbook. He also mentors youth in the Skykomish Robotics Program. He is well known and widely respected among his students both present and past.
